While they did not secure a victory in the Zonal Championship round, the Amboseli Junior football team are all winners in our eyes.

While much of the world had its eyes on the World Cup, a group of boys at Amboseli Junior School in Kenya were creating a football story of their own.

Many of the players took the field wearing only their school shoes—or, in some cases, just their socks. Yet what they lacked in equipment, they more than made up for in determination, teamwork, and belief.

When I first shared news from the tournament, there was cause for celebration: Out of dozens of public and private schools competing, Amboseli Junior School advanced further than ever before, earning its first Sub-Zonal Championship and a place in the next round of competition. For a school that had never reached this level before, it was an extraordinary achievement.

The journey ultimately came to an end at the Zonal Championships. After a closely contested tournament, Amboseli finished in second place. Although they did not advance further, their accomplishment remains remarkable—and deeply meaningful to everyone who has supported the school.

What stands out most is not where the tournament ended, but how far these students came. They competed against larger, better-equipped schools and proved that talent, hard work, and perseverance can overcome formidable odds.

I shared this story on my personal Facebook page, and thanks to an outpouring of generosity, will soon be traveling to Amboseli with donations of sports shoes. If you are visiting Kenya as an O.A.T. traveler and are interested in helping the team, consider bringing some from home—or ask your Trip Experience Leader if there’s a possibility to purchase some on site. Grand Circle Foundation has also been proud to support Amboseli Junior School through investments in sports facilities, footballs, and goal nets.

But this success belongs entirely to the students, whose commitment and resilience carried them farther than anyone imagined possible. Their story is a reminder that sports can do far more than produce winners and losers. They build confidence, strengthen communities, and teach young people to believe in themselves.

The tournament may be over, but the lessons—and the pride felt by their teachers, families, and supporters—will last far longer than any final score.

Congratulations to the students, staff, and families of Amboseli Junior School. Your journey may have ended on the pitch, but your story is still inspiring all of us.
